Fifty years ago today, one of popular music's most celebrated record albums was released in Great Britain — the Beatles' Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Issued in the United States the next day, the album was an immediate, massive hit, and critics celebrated its lyrics, innovative structure, recording techniques and artwork. When the album was released in 1967, the U. S. was a notably different nation. Before the year was over, the population hit the 200-million mark — now, it's approaching 325 million. At the time, America's median age was 27.7 years — now nearly age 38.
