DOWNERS GROVE, Ill., April 12, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Strategies for effectively identifying and addressing hidden barriers and unconscious bias in the classroom and workplace is the topic of an upcoming free webinar from CompTIA, the nonprofit association for the technology industry.
"Understanding and Reducing Unconscious Bias & Women in IT Resources" is scheduled for 11 a.m. CDT on Thursday, April 28, 2016. The webinar is presented by the CompTIA Instructor Network and the association's Advancing Women in IT Community.
The discussion on how unconscious bias discourages women and other underrepresented groups from pursuing education and careers in technology will be led by Elizabeth K. Eger, a graduate research associate with the National Center for Women & Information Technology and Ph.D. candidate at the University of Colorado.
Unconscious bias can affect everyday interactions and create institutional barriers to recruitment, retention and advancement of women and underrepresented groups in the workforce. One study estimated the cost of losing and replacing the more than two million American workers who leave their jobs each year due to unfairness and discrimination at $64 billion annually.[1]
In this interactive presentation, Eger will explore how educators and employers can effectively address hidden barriers in order to better attract and retain the diverse student and employee populations that will drive future innovation. Webinar attendees will learn about concrete strategies and resources for eliminating unconscious bias in teaching and recruiting; and how to implement better practices in their classrooms and organizations.
Women in IT Resources
The April 28 webinar will feature a review of resources available from CompTIA's Advancing Women in IT Community that can be used to promote awareness of opportunities for women in the technology field. Community manager Cathy Alper will review the library of resources and how they can be used to encourage women and girls to pursue careers in technology.
