ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Sept. 8, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Univision News, the award-winning news division of Univision Communications Inc. (UCI), the leading media company serving Hispanic America, has partnered with The Poynter Institute to provide training for the Univision Network's news producers and assignment desk editors.
The teaching and coaching program will be available online through News University (www.newsu.org), Poynter's e-learning site, and will be led by Al Tompkins, Poynter's Senior Faculty for Online and Broadcast.
"I am so honored to train Univision journalists," said Tompkins. "Spanish language TV is vital to its viewers, especially in an election season when candidates are focused on issues of special interest to Latinos."
"I am especially pleased that we are focusing our training on two generally underserved groups, TV news producers and assignment editors," Tompkins added. "These are the behind-the-scenes journalists who make minute-to-minute decisions about what you see on the air."
"We are delighted to offer our producers and assignment editors the opportunity to strengthen and update their skills through specialized training from such an innovative and recognized institution as The Poynter Institute," said Lourdes Torres, Vice President, Regional News & Director -Special Projects. "The surge of digital and social media is rapidly changing the global journalism landscape and Univision News is committed to staying at the forefront. Educating our staff in the latest trends and technologies is an important step in the process."
Through a combination of online seminars and in-person instruction, Univision News staff will gather virtually for targeted teaching, Q&A and feedback, along with live group discussions.
Beginning this month, the training sessions will focus on topics like:
- Story development and finding key motivators that make great stories
- Where to mine stories that others miss
- Story writing skills and techniques for clearer, stronger writing
- Using social media for both story and audience development
- Exploring Freedom of Information Act Laws and data trails
- The latest digital tools and how to coach others in the best ways to use them
- Developing critical thinking techniques to discover better stories
Univision is one of 20 organizations to partner with Poynter for its training needs in recent months. Poynter's other partners include Google, Gannett, McClatchy, Journal Media, The Associated Press, National Geographic and the Institute of International Education's Fulbright Scholar program.
