PORTLAND, Ore., Sept. 13, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- In an effort to meet regional demand for web developers, a new continuing education program will launch in Portland this January. The University of Oregon department of Continuing and Professional Education is partnering with Trilogy Education, a leading workforce accelerator, to offer the first University of Oregon Coding Boot Camp.
The 24-week, part-time program is geared toward adult learners and working professionals. Students will gain skills to develop dynamic end-to-end web applications, as well as receive a certificate in Full-Stack Web Development from the University of Oregon at the end of the program. The non-credit program starts Jan 15, 2019 at University of Oregon Portland, 70 NW Couch St. Classes will be from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. two nights during the week and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
Enrollment is now open at bootcamp.uoregon.edu.
"This intensive program is designed to give working adults in Portland from all backgrounds and experience levels an entry point into the region's growing digital economy," said Sandra Gladney, executive director of UO Continuing and Professional Education. "Increasingly, tech skills are table-stakes for career success. By leveraging Trilogy Education's proven platform and global network, the University of Oregon can give more adults in our community access to a rewarding career trajectory, while at the same time bridging hiring gaps for the city's employers."
Web development ranks among the nation's fastest-growing professions. Portland-area employers in particular have a high need for skilled, job-ready tech talent, as the city expands into a hub for tech giants and startups alike. In the past 12 months, businesses in the region struggled to fill more than 23,000 open roles requiring some level of coding ability.
The program's curriculum covers the foundations of coding, algorithms and data structure plus intensive training in JavaScript, Node.js, HTML, CSS, jQuery, Java and more. No previous training or experience is required, but applicants should have an understanding of coding basics.
In addition to classroom instruction, students will spend 20 hours a week on outside projects, homework, and experiential learning activities. They'll also build a professional project portfolio to showcase their abilities and hone their competitive edge in the employment market. Students will also receive a range of career-planning services, portfolio reviews, recruiting assistance, and extensive staff support.
"The University of Oregon and Trilogy Education are aligned in our belief that skills-based training is a powerful economic growth driver for cities like Portland. A strong, digitally skilled workforce attracts businesses, spurs investment, and increases innovation," said Dan Sommer, Founder and CEO of Trilogy Education. "We've designed the University of Oregon Coding Boot Camp to give working Portlanders the critical technical skills to make an immediate impact for local employers."
