UCAR Joins Alliance for Earth Observations
ARLINGTON, Va., May 17, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The University Corporation of Atmospheric Research is the newest organization to join the Alliance for Earth Observations.
With the backdrop of the record-breaking extreme weather events of 2011 and an already active 2012, the need to better monitor and understand the changing state of the Earth's resources and environment has never been clearer.
"As demonstrated by recent experiences alone, we cannot overemphasize how dangerous and costly weather can be," said Dr. Tom Bogdan, UCAR president.
Founded in 1960 and headquartered in Boulder, Col., UCAR is a nonprofit consortium of more than 100 member universities and academic affiliates that complements the role of academia by enabling complex, long-term scientific programs beyond the reach of individual universities. In addition to strengthening interaction and collaboration within the academic community, UCAR directly contributes to our understanding of the Earth system, particularly weather and climate, through its management of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR).
"UCAR has long been a collaborator to the work of the Alliance so we are thrilled to count it as one of our members," said Alliance Executive Director Nancy Colleton.
The Alliance for Earth Observations, the private sector's voice in ensuring the rapid and broad delivery of the timeliest, most comprehensive and accurate environmental information for improved decision making, has long viewed UCAR as a partner in advocating the importance of improved understanding of Earth system processes. In the context of a difficult budget environment threatening the nation's ability to meet growing demand of environmental information, UCAR's membership to the Alliance could not be more timely.
Discussing the need for improved measurement capabilities and new technologies to advance forecasting tools, Dr. Bogdan explained that "NCAR is engaged across the range of these activities, which is why our affiliation with the Alliance makes so much sense. Through our combined efforts, we will work toward better coordination and improved information for understanding key linkages within the Earth climate system and our interactions with it."
With its expansive network of researchers and institutions engaged in this research, UCAR brings added strength to the Alliance's work in advocating for improved and sustained, long-term Earth observations to advance our understanding of the Earth system and improve our ability to meet the challenges posed by changing weather and climate conditions.
