IRVINE, Calif., Sept. 8, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The University of California, Irvine Extension announces a new specialized studies program tailored for educators at any level who are interested in developing their skills in cognitive and student-centered learning. With state standards continuing to evolve at a rapid pace, the fully online Student-Centered Learning Specialized Studies Program offers participants methods in student-centered learner instruction and applicable classroom practices based on the most recent learner theories. The program features five required courses that cover topics from assessment analytics to learner differentiation.
"This program provides progressive and innovative skillsets for teachers, parents, administrators and tutors with proven research-driven practices and practical real-time implementation techniques," said Angela Jeantet, director of education and business programs at UC Irvine Extension.
Participants in the Student-Centered Learning Specialized Studies Program will develop ways to meet the cognitive, motivational and socio-emotional needs and interests of all learners. Moreover, participants will be able to identify and evaluate diversely talented students and develop instructional strategies based on individual learning needs and interests. The five program courses are as follows:
- "Building Cognitive Curriculum" – (Fall Quarter) addresses ways to empower students to take on the responsibility for educational growth, and engender the need for self-instruction and cognitive effort individually.
- "Differentiated Instruction" – (Fall Quarter) covers key principles and instructional strategies of differentiation of the core curriculum through depth and complexity while developing curricula aligned with the California standards.
- "Motivation and Responsibility in the Student-Centered Classroom" – (Winter Quarter) instructs teachers on how to ascertain student interests and needs, increase student self-reliance and curiosity, as well as how to develop an active, reflexive approach to teaching and learning.
- "Student Assessment and Measurement" – (to be scheduled) presents and examines the ways in which analytics, assessments and data can be used for maximum impact in and out of the classroom.
- "Career-Based Learning and Problem-Solving in K-12" – (Fall Quarter) covers how instructors can teach their students to "Think Like Experts" to develop inquiry and problem-solving skills.
