Two-Millionth Tree is in Apache Foundation's Horizon

HOUSTON, June 6, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- As the Apache Foundation Tree Grant Program opens its fifth annual call for grant applications, tree No. 2 million is among those pegged for donation.

With 1.8 million donated trees firmly rooted in the ground, the landmark tree will be among several hundred thousand donated during the 2011-2012 tree-planting season. The foundation set the lofty goal of planting 3 million trees by 2014 and is well on its way.

Since 2006, the foundation has awarded trees to more than 250 non-profit organizations across 14 states including schools, cities, counties, parks, universities, cemeteries, homeowner associations, baseball associations, soccer associations, youth associations, Boy Scout troops, wildlife refuges and community non-profits.

Apache Foundation blends the company's philanthropic and environmental stewardship to enhance communities and address some of the world's pressing issues. The Tree Grant Program focuses on improving wildlife habitats, restoring storm damage, and enhancing cities and neighborhoods.

The foundation is the philanthropic arm of Apache Corporation (NYSE, Nasdaq: APA), an oil and gas exploration and production company with operations in the United States, Canada, Egypt, the United Kingdom North Sea, Australia and Argentina.

In response to vast damage inflicted on Galveston Island by Hurricane Ike in 2008, Apache stepped forward to help the island city reach its goal of planting 25,000 trees in five years.

Jackie Cole, president of the Galveston Island Tree Conservancy and chair of the City of Galveston Tree Committee, praises the foundation.
