Top 100 Characters in Fiction Listed
Explore what makes these world-changing figures so memorable
PRINCETON JUNCTION, N.J., Feb. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Who is your favorite fictional character?
Sherlock Holmes, Huck Finn, Pinocchio, Anna Karenina, Genji, Superman, Scarlett O'Hara, Don Quixote, Scrooge and Jane Eyre may not have walked the Earth (or flown, in Superman's case), but they certainly stride through our lives. They influence us personally: as childhood friends, catalysts to our dreams, or even fantasy lovers. Characters do change the world. In Dr. Lucy Pollard-Gott's fascinating new "top 100" book, "The Fictional 100" (published by iUniverse), readers can learn of the impact of Solzhenitsyn's Ivan Denisovich, in exposing the conditions of the Soviet Gulag, or Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom, in arousing anti-slavery feeling in America. Words such as quixotic, Oedipal, and herculean show how fictional characters permeate our language. It's obvious but fairly undocumented: Some of the most influential and interesting people in the world are fictional.
Readers, movie lovers, teachers and students will discover where some of their favorite characters rank, and why, and may argue why one character should rank higher or lower. They can learn from leading critics who have grappled with some of the enduring puzzles characters present: What is the real nature of Hamlet's problem -- madness, hesitation, Oedipal conflict? How should we view Huck Finn -- both in Mark Twain's time and in ours? What is uniquely compelling about Toni Morrison's enigmatic character, Beloved? And what was Dr. Jekyll really trying to Hyde? Count down with Dr. Pollard-Gott for an exciting new look at the best fictional characters -- and find out where your favorite ranks.
