CHARLOTTE, N.C., July 20, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Leading drywall manufacturer National Gypsum announced today the three winners of its PURPLE-to-Perfect Contest launched in May in honor of National Home Improvement Month. The winning entries were submitted from families across the country, from Olathe, Kansas, to Charlotte, North Carolina, to Dousman, Wisconsin.
Highly charismatic TV personality and award-winning interior designer Anitra Mecadon will work hand-in-hand this summer with these winners of a media room, bathroom and garage renovation. Mecadon made the official announcement today on AskforPurple.com, which is where the winners will document their individual projects from start to finish.
"National Gypsum selected these winners because they creatively demonstrated how a renovation with our high-performance PURPLE® drywall would immediately improve their homes," said Jay Watt, National Gypsum's director of marketing. "We can't wait to see how Anitra combines her imaginative designs with the right mold-, moisture- and mildew-resistant PURPLE® drywall for each space – whether it's standard PURPLE® XP® drywall, PURPLE® Hi-Impact XP® drywall for resistance to scratches, scuffs, dents and accidental holes, or PURPLE® SoundBreak® XP® drywall that drastically reduces the noise heard between rooms."
National Gypsum's PURPLE-to-Perfect contest winners are:
$25,000 MEDIA ROOM
Tim and Lauren Oliphant
Olathe, Kansas
The Oliphant family wants to turn their basement into a high-tech family room. Mecadon plans to visit Tim Oliphant, his wife and three young boys – including one just born on July 18 – to see firsthand how she can design a perfect space where they will spend countless hours.
"With two boys and a new baby brother, the Oliphants need a room where everyone can have fun and get loud downstairs without disturbing the new baby in the nursery upstairs," said Mecadon, who is expecting her first child in the fall. "That's why they asked us to use PURPLE® SoundBreak® XP® Drywall, which will drastically reduce the noise heard between rooms."
$15,000 BATHROOM MAKEOVER
Nate and Kyle Smith
Charlotte, North Carolina
The Smith family showed National Gypsum their outdated and tiny bathroom with 30-year-old tile, old carpeting and a leaky shower door – all potential contributors to mold, moisture and mildew. Mecadon sees great potential for the space, since she has the ability to use a nearby closet to expand the bathroom, using PURPLE® XP® drywall that's mold-, moisture- and mildew-resistant, along with PermaBase PLUS® Cement Board for use behind the tile in the critical wet areas such as tubs and showers.
$10,000 GARAGE MAKEOVER
Richard and Gretchen Lindlau
Dousman, Wisconsin
The Lindlau family's cluttered garage resembles many others in America – except that it's bigger and includes a makeshift rock-climbing wall used by Lindlau's son and daughter who are avid ice and rock climbers. They hope Mecadon will use clever storage solutions so they can fit their cars inside the garage during sub-zero winter months in Wisconsin. Mecadon plans to install the toughest walls National Gypsum offers, PURPLE® Hi-Impact® XP® drywall, with a fiberglass mesh embedded in its core.
Mecadon has been National Gypsum's spokesperson for four years and is best known as the star of DIY Network's hit series Mega Dens and numerous other TV shows for DIY and HGTV, including All American Handyman, Behind the Build Dream Home, Behind the Build Smart Home and more.
"I'm excited to work with all of the winning families and help them transform their spaces by using the right PURPLE® drywall to meet their needs," said Mecadon. "Whether they need to resist mold, moisture or mildew, noise between rooms or a dent in the wall, we've got them covered with PURPLE®."
