Golden State Parents Will Discover Education Options for Children During National School Choice Week
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Jan. 18, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Families and educators who've chosen a wide variety of schools are celebrating educational opportunity for California's millions of students during School Choice Week.
The Week will feature 2,778 events and activities across the Golden State, including open house events at schools, school fairs, homeschool information sessions, and other celebrations.
Nationwide, 40,549 events and activities are being organized to raise awareness during National School Choice Week (Jan. 20-26, 2019), and 10.8 million Americans are expected to participate. It will be the largest series of education-related events and activities in U.S. history.
In California, there are many educational options, including traditional public schools, public charter schools, public magnet schools, private schools, online learning, and homeschooling. California permits charter schools to offer full-time online instruction.
On the local level, elected officials and community leaders are recognizing the importance of educational opportunity by officially recognizing the Week. The counties of Plumas and Riverside and the cities of Blythe, Cathedral City , Chino Hills, City of Belmont, City of La Verne, City of Rocklin, Grand Terrace, Half Moon Bay, Highland, Kinston, La Habra Heights, Lemon Grove, Oakley, Oceanside, Patterson, Perris, Rio Vista, San Fernando, Santa Clara, Sierra Madre, Surfside Beach, Thousand Oaks, Tustin, Vallejo, and Walnut Creek, and West Covina have issued proclamations recognizing School Choice Week in their community.
Celebrated since 2011, National School Choice Week is an independent public awareness effort. The Week is nonpartisan and nonpolitical, and it is not related to any legislative advocacy campaign.
"We focus on not only the importance of choice with our students but the awareness of the type of school that our students and their families are in... We do a lot of media and PA announcements during the school day and during the week. We also have a lot of different student service organizations and groups work on community service action projects," said Brian Bauer, executive director at Granada Hills Charter High School, a charter school serving 4,650 students in Granada Hills, CA.
"National School Choice Week is the perfect time for California families to explore the school choice options available for children all across the state," said National School Choice Week President Andrew Campanella.
