The Zarlengo Foundation Donates $450,000 to Havern School to support the New Learning Evaluation Center
Multidisciplinary assessment services now offered to children throughout the Colorado community
DENVER, Oct. 10, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The Zarlengo Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that supports schools and programs for children with learning disabilities in and around the Denver community, today announced a $450,000 gift to Havern School to support the new Learning Evaluation Center that will serve the entire Colorado community.
In December 2016, Havern launched a $5.5 million capital campaign to purchase the 90,000-square foot building and 13-acre hilltop campus from The Sisters of Loretto. The property has been home to Havern School and the Loretto Center for the past 51 years. This generous gift to the campaign was announced at the recent Zarlengo Foundation Evening of Comedy event featuring Howie Mandel at the Bellco Theater.
Since 1966, Havern has provided bright children with learning disabilities a K-8 intervention-based educational experience so they can reach their full academic potential. The 13-acre hilltop campus serves an average of 85 students each year who have a diagnosis of Specific Learning Disabilities (such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia), and/or experience challenges in the areas of executive functioning, expressive and receptive language, fine and gross motor skills, sensory processing, attention (AD/HD), processing speed or working memory.
The newly named Zarlengo Foundation Learning Evaluation Center will provide a wide range of multidisciplinary assessment services to children throughout the Colorado community. The team of licensed clinical and school psychologists, speech/language pathologists and occupational therapists offer a variety of assessments for students who are struggling in school, including psychoeducational evaluations, speech/language evaluations and occupational therapy evaluations. A psychoeducational evaluation assesses learning difficulties and may include measures of intellectual/cognitive ability, attention, executive functioning skills, academic achievement and social/emotional skills.
Additionally, the Zarlengo Foundation Learning Evaluation Center will offer speech/language evaluations which can address concerns in the areas of expressive and receptive language, social pragmatics and articulation. Occupational therapy assessments address areas such as fine and gross motor ability, visual motor skills, handwriting and sensory concerns.
This level of comprehensive valuations can help to determine whether a child will benefit from remediation or accommodations and can help determine if a child is talented or gifted, as well as to diagnose Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD), specific learning disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorders and mood disorders.
"Havern has received generous support from the Zarlengo Foundation for the past decade. As the only foundation in the state of Colorado that exclusively serves children with learning disabilities, we were the proud recipients of the foundation's very first grant in 2006," said Cathleen M. Pasquariello, M.Ed., Head of Havern School. "Their ongoing commitment to children with learning disabilities and to the Havern community is a testament to the dedication they have to enriching the lives of bright, capable children throughout Colorado."
