NEW YORK, Jan. 10, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Noom Inc. and the YMCA of Greater Kansas City announced today a strategic partnership that combines a strong community-based in-person approach with mobile technology and scalable coaching tools to address the growing prevalence of prediabetes and hypertension. Initially the joint program will be deployed at the YMCA of Greater Kansas City with plans to demonstrate effectiveness and scalability for other YMCAs across the country to consider offering it in their communities.
As a part of the partnership, the YMCA of Greater Kansas City will leverage Noom's scalable behavior change platform to surface participants' behavioral trends and patterns, allowing coaches to prioritize and intervene in real-time through Noom's mobile application. For the first time, YMCA coaches will be able to analyze individual eating habits, exercise time and engagement with targeted content as well as drill down into details (i.e. macronutrient content) to provide meaningful interventions.
"The joint model we've created with Noom combines the power of community institutions like the YMCA with mobile technology. It has profound implications for helping prevent diabetes and manage hypertension on an enormous scale," said John Mikos, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at YMCA of Greater Kansas City.
According to the CDC, 86 million Americans or 1 in 3 adults have prediabetes. The total cost of diagnosed diabetes is $245 billion. In addition, another 79 million Americans or 1 in 3 adults have high blood pressure.
"Noom is committed to leveraging our behavior change programs to improve health outcomes and address the millions of people with prediabetes and hypertension throughout the world," said Saeju Jeong, CEO and cofounder at Noom. "Our partnership with the YMCA of Greater Kansas City is the next step in putting our proven technology and structured programs to work in the community setting."
YMCA participants will be able to use Noom Coach, Noom's mobile application, to track their physical activity, log their meals, receive ongoing support from their health coach and peer group as well as read program specific content. Noom Coach contains a proprietary food database of over 700,000 branded and generic foods, along with 3.7 million unique food portions. Because food logging is the most important feature in prediabetes and hypertension programs, Noom's technology drives significant health outcomes as it allows participants to log their meals in just seconds.
"Utilizing Noom's self-monitoring tools will further augment our reach into the community by guiding individuals throughout their day and providing real-time, actionable feedback from their YMCA coach along the way," said Mikos. "We look forward to seeing continued success with regards to improved health outcomes and lifestyle change across populations."
