The Village School Students Tackle Local Issues on a Global Scale at the United Nations
HOUSTON, July 26, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Sophomore students Aanya Bhandari, (age 16), and Rahul Agarwal, (age 16), from The Village School, a Nord Anglia Education school, presented their solutions to addressing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at a side event of the UN High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) in New York, 14 July. The students joined a group of 87 Nord Anglia student ambassadors who presented their solutions from their local communities to representatives of governments, the UN, UNICEF, President of the UN General Assembly, H.E. Peter Thomson and Executive Director of UNICEF, Anthony Lake.
To accomplish their goals, Bhandari and Agarwal developed the S.E.E.D Project (Sustain Empower Embolden and Develop), which aims to help individuals who are acutely malnourished in India. Collaborating with their peers locally, the students developed an international solution to address the factors that the World Health Organization says contributes to hunger: low productivity, post-harvest loss, and lack of nutritious food.
The ambitious three-pronged approach hopes to solve these problems by focusing on educating smaller farmers through a Skills Development Program, empowering women through a Work for Pay methodology, and bridging the gap between smaller farmers and the access of seeds.
The students plan to pilot the system in India and have designed the program so that it can easily be expanded to different countries that have different needs. Their plan will ultimately provide a replicable, scalable, and sustainable solution for world hunger.
"When traveling to India, it is hard to ignore the wealth disparity and prevalent malnutrition. You see the prominent issues when you view side by side those who suffer from both poverty and severe undernourishment along with those who are very well off. This cause hits home to us, and we are determined to develop an appropriate action plan to combat this problem," said Rahul Agarwal.
"We are so honored to be able to work on the UN Sustainable Development Goals to give our students the opportunity to experience first-hand how to engage in the kind of active citizenship that will most certainly lead to a better world in the future," said Gabriella Rowe, Head of The Village School.
