BOULDER, Colo., April 1, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Ello - the Creators Network - is again seeing significant growth in response to manipulative behaviors from the prevailing advertising platforms. When Instagram (owned by Facebook) announced two weeks ago that they were joining their parent company and Twitter, and moving to an algorithmic stream, TechCrunch ran with this headline: "Instagram is switching its feed from chronological to best posts first." http://techcrunch.com/2016/03/15/filteredgram/
Instagram claims in its press release that "based on the likelihood you'll be interested in the content, your relationship with the person posting and the timeliness of the post" is how they'll determine what posts you'll see. How that equates to "best post first" is difficult to understand.
And best for whom?
The short answer is shareholders and advertisers. People, brands and publishers all lose. Based on responses to the TechCrunch article, articles such as this one How Facebook ruined Instagram and the large influx of new users on Ello, seems as though the prevailing sense is that people do not see these algorithmic changes as beneficial to them.
"New user signups are up almost 15x and iOS downloads the same," says Ello CEO Todd Berger. "We know that our values win, that people do not want to feel manipulated and that a sustainable community does not have to be built on farming its members' data. That business model is creepy and objectifying."
"We believe our values matter. The social media model has been completely built on scale - more people, more data, more ads sold and served. We believe impact is way more important than scale. Bigger, bigger, bigger represents a path, but it is not one that values people, substance and quality. Ello sees a path where influence exceeds scale, and revenue is built in service to creators and community.
Ello's values include legal commitments to never selling ads and user data to third parties and are codified in the company's Public Benefit Corporation charter. With recent news that Instagram and Twitter have implemented algorithmic based streams, Ello offers the only alternative for creators, brands and publications to maintain organic reach with the followings they build. It's not just that 1 in every 6 posts in an Instagram feed is an ad, but also that quality brands get nickel and dimed to have their posts viewed by the followings they have built. This model is less about serving people the "best," and far more about serving as many ads as possible.
About Ello: Launched in Fall 2014 as an online community for creators, Ello is the best place for creative people everywhere to discover, discuss, publish, share and promote the things they are passionate about. Ello is for anyone who respects, enjoys, is entertained by, or participates in the creative process. Ello is available on the web and via the Ello App, available in the Apple App store.
