The State Botanical Garden of Georgia Deploys Mushroom Networks' Broadband Bonding™ Solution for Internet Connectivity
With cellular data communications the only option for Internet connectivity, the Garden found a cost-effective, high-speed Internet access solution in Mushroom Networks' Portabella 3G/4G Broadband Bonding appliance.
SAN DIEGO, Sept. 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Mushroom Networks, Inc., innovators of Broadband Bonding™ technology, announced today that the State Botanical Garden of Georgia is using Mushroom's Broadband Bonding technology to provide staff and visitors high-speed Internet access. The botanical garden, which is part of the University of Georgia and located in Athens, Ga., is using Mushroom Networks' Portabella, which bonds 3G and 4G wireless data cards into a single, high-speed mobile Internet. Without Portabella, Internet connectivity would be too costly and complex an endeavor for the botanical garden.
The 313-acre State Botanical Garden of Georgia sits at the edge of a long driveway, about a half-mile from a main road. The distance is just far enough to put the site out of reach of the area's Internet provider's service. The garden could have opted in for fiber, at a cost of nearly $20,000. Cellular data service was really the only solution, and only if the garden installed multiple wireless data cards with the innovative Broadband Bonding solution to obtain enterprise grade IP connectivity.
Going without Internet connectivity was not an option. Staff, researchers, university professors and students use an existing intra-fiber network that interlinks the garden's three buildings. There are also anywhere from 50 to more than 100 visitors to the garden daily, and there's Wi-Fi network they can use. The staff has affixed QR codes throughout the garden and visitors can scan them with their smart phones to learn more about the area and plants they are seeing. Without an Internet connection, staff, professors and students can't access email or any other systems at the university's main campus, and visitors can't really use their smart phones or enjoy the QR codes.
"There simply weren't very many viable options for us," said James Gilstrap, IT professional at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. "After talking with multiple engineers from the Internet service provider here and two mobile carrier companies, we decided cellular data service was really the only way to go but we knew one wireless data card wouldn't be enough in terms of bandwidth capacity as well as reliability. We needed at least four, and we needed a way to bond them together. Mushroom Networks had the solution, and an extremely knowledgeable and supportive engineering team to help us implement the Portabella and get us back on the Internet."
Portabella's bonding technology aggregates the capacity of as many as eight USB-based cellular data cards, providing increased access bandwidth in both uplink and downlink directions for communication with host servers at the university as well as out to the public Internet.
"The State Botanical Garden of Georgia was facing a unique dilemma, and Mushroom Networks' Broadband Bonding technology and Portabella device was up to the challenge," said Cahit Akin, co-founder and CEO of Mushroom Networks. "Now, with ample bandwidth and high-quality cellular data connectivity, the garden's staff, educators, students and visitors can communicate beyond the collections of beautiful gardens, via a high-speed, cellular Internet connection."
