Twenty New Schools Selected for Fall 2017
MORGAN HILL, Calif., May 23, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The Specialized Foundation announced the 20 middle schools selected for the 2017-2018 Riding for Focus school program. The program integrates cycling into the physical education curriculum as a means to help students improve academic, health, and social success.
"Selected from hundreds of applications, this year's candidates were remarkably competitive. The grant committee was deeply inspired by each school's passion to better their students' learning and performance through cycling," said Ted Theocheung CEO, The Specialized Foundation. "The remaining qualified candidate schools are eligible for the next grant window. Earlier this spring, the Foundation piloted its first partner matching grant program that enabled 100% of the partner donation to be directed to the school, extending the reach to more schools and students."
Schools selected for the Riding for Focus grant program receive curriculum training at the Specialized Headquarters, as well as an invitation to the Riding for Focus Health and Education Summit to be hosted by Stanford University. In addition to the curriculum, which is designed for schools of all types and sizes, the school will receive a fleet of bikes, helmets, maintenance equipment, and local retailer support and maintenance. The goal is to establish a sustainable school cycling physical education program that lasts in the community for multiple years.

The Specialized Foundation's Riding for Focus school program is designed to introduce students to cycling's positive effects on academic performance, health, and wellbeing, with a focus on students with learning differences such as ADHD. The curriculum has been developed based on studies conducted by a third-party research organization, which examined the impact of cycling on middle school students.
The research gathered is based on two comprehensive studies focused on two segments. The first showed a positive impact of cycling for children with ADHD through classroom performance and behavioral improvement. The second demonstrated higher Standardized Test Scores for students that participated in the bike program versus students that did not. Recently, The Specialized Foundation partnered with Stanford University to further research the positive effects of cycling for children.
