The Search for Comfort Continues: Third-Annual List of America's Coziest Cities Revealed by Makers of Honeywell Heaters
Boston Moves Up to a #2 Ranking and Portland, Maine Enters Into the Top Ten
MARLBOROUGH, Mass., Feb. 9, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- As temperatures plunge, many of us are dreaming of warmer weather, but, you may not have to go as far as you think to find comfort. To some, being cozy may mean curling up in a blanket by a crackling fireplace, while to others, it could mean a quaint city filled with charming streets, bookstores and warm coffee shops. For the third year in a row, the makers of Honeywell portable heaters have teamed up with Dr. Ted Myatt, ScD, an environmental health scientist, to name America's coziest cities. This year, Asheville, North Carolina climbs to #1 on the list and Boston, Massachusetts takes #2.
Using updated criteria, the study factored in the prevalence of specialty grocery stores, coffee shops, bookstores and bakeries. Average winter temperatures and annual average snowfall were also considered, keeping in mind that moderate snowfall can be picturesque and comforting whereas too much snow and extreme cold can lead to cabin fever.
"We searched the entire United States for cities and towns of varying sizes that inspire coziness year round," said Dr. Ted Myatt, ScD. "Boston, for example, experienced record snowfall last year, yet has quaint winding streets lined with brownstones and local shops, which contribute to an overall cozy feel."
So where is the coziest place to live? Based on the criteria and expert ranking, below is a list of the top 10 coziest U.S. cities this year:
- Asheville, N.C.
- Boston, Mass.
- Salinas, Calif.
- Portland, Ore.
- Portland, Maine

- Providence, R.I.
- Spokane, Wash.
