The National Network of Digital Schools Supports Literacy Through Donation
Books donated to client schools will foster love of reading in students locally, globally
BEAVER, Pa., July 25, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National Network of Digital Schools today announced that it will donate 450 books to support the Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School's National Honor Society's community service project. PA Cyber, the largest and most successful cyber charter school in Pennsylvania, is a client of NNDS.
Through the month of July, student members of PA Cyber's National Honor Society are collecting new and used books to donate to Room to Read, a non-profit organization that works with communities in developing countries to establish libraries, create local language children's literature, and advocate for gender equality in education.
The National Network of Digital Schools had leftover inventory of several children's fiction books that were no longer being used in the company's Little Lincoln Kindergarten curriculum. Company directors voted to donate 25 copies of each book to the PA Cyber student project.
"When I learned of this worthwhile initiative, I was eager to find a way to help," said Kellie Hamilton, Director of Elementary Curriculum and Instruction, who spearheaded the donation effort. "When I learned that we had an inventory of 18 children's books that were no longer being used as part of our curriculum, I knew that we could donate them to support this meaningful student project."
"NHS members set a goal of collecting three books per member and hoped to collect approximately 200 books for their project," said Marian Acon, co-advisor of the schools National Honor Society. "However, through the generous donation from NNDS and Lincoln Interactive, the membership will see that donation tripled. Therefore, primary students worldwide will begin or increase their literacy skills thanks to the efforts of the NHS members and the Lincoln Interactive contribution."
Additionally, NNDS is will make a donation to two other clients – the Midland Borough School District and Prima Learning Center. Each client will receive three copies of each of the 18 titles.
"It is vital that we support our client schools in their philanthropic and educational efforts," said Hamilton. "I am pleased that, in this case, we can do so while simultaneously supporting literacy and education in young students in our local community and throughout the world."
