"Our brother Brian, Stacy and I lost our mom Bunny Koppelman to pancreatic cancer. It feels right that the company created in her name and memory will now contribute to finding a cure for this horrendous disease," said Bunny Eyez co-founder Jenny Hutt. "The Lustgarten Foundation is funding cutting edge research, and driving the latest breakthroughs in the effort to eradicate this disease. We join them in their ongoing commitment to find a cure for pancreatic cancer," said Bunny Eyez co-founder Stacy Fritz.
"We know all too well that pancreatic cancer devastates families," said Kerri Kaplan, President and CEO of the Foundation. "That is why we are working tirelessly to fund the very best research which is why partnerships like this one are so important. The more research we can fund, the faster we will find a cure. We are grateful to Bunny Eyez for their support."
Pancreatic cancer is a swift and silent disease that often remains undetected until it's too late. In 2018, more than 55,000 people in the United States will be diagnosed and over 44,000 will die – 71 percent within the first year. Only eight percent of patients survive five years after diagnosis. Pancreatic cancer is the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. By 2020, it will be the second.
Twenty years ago when the Lustgarten Foundation was established, pancreatic cancer was an "orphan" disease, with less than $16.2 million, or less than half of one percent of the total National Cancer Institute's (NCI) budget supporting fewer than 15 researchers nationally. Today, in large part due to the efforts of the Lustgarten Foundation, there are now thousands of researchers working on the disease. Research is moving faster than ever before, but there is still much work to be done.
