SAN FRANCISCO, April 7, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The happy egg co., the leader in hen welfare and the first free range egg producer to have received the highest certification by the American Humane Association®, is pleased to announce they have exceeded their goal of inspiring 25,000 consumers to get #FlockingHappy, a campaign to encourage consumers to understand hen welfare. In collaboration with TV host and best-selling author Ross Mathews to benefit Compassion in World Farming, the happy egg co. launched its #FlockingHappy movement to motivate consumers to make more humane purchasing decisions when buying eggs. Since its launch on February 11th, the happy egg co. secured more than 25,000 signatures, and will continue their efforts throughout the year.
Since California's Prop 2 went into effect in January 2015, the conversation around animal welfare has augmented significantly. Consumers are paying attention to how their food is sourced and are beginning to expect high humane food practices. However, there is still a massive confusion in the egg aisle, deciphering the difference between cage-free, free range, organic, and farm fresh eggs. The #FlockingHappy movement was designed to not only educate consumers about the differences in egg carton labelling, but to urge consumers to commit to making more humane purchases to support the humane treatment of egg laying hens around the world. Within the first 48-hours, the petition secured more than 20,000 consumer signatures, and has since reached just shy of 29,000 pledges.
"True free range means that egg-laying hens, with 30-inch wingspans, should have space to stretch, forage and spend their days outdoors as much as possible," explains Jenni Danby, Chief Marketing Officer of the happy egg co. "The unfortunate reality is that 85 percent of eggs still come from hens that are caged in barns, and that even the term 'cage-free' means that hens are confined in a barn. The #FlockingHappy campaign encourages consumers to understand the differences in egg production and inspire them to contribute to hen welfare as easily as they can, simply by making more informed decisions in the egg aisle."
To anchor the importance of animal welfare and help support the happier lifestyle of farm animals everywhere, the happy egg co. partnered with the worldwide leader in farm animal welfare, Compassion in World Farming. The happy egg co. pledged that for every signature they received in support of the campaign, they would match in a $1 donation up to $25,000- to support Compassion in World Farming's initiative to raise the bar on the living conditions for farm animals. In observance of National Farm Animals Day, a day intended to raise awareness of the welfare of farm animals across the country, The happy egg co. has met its commitment and has contributed $25,000 to Compassion in World Farming.
"The happy egg co.'s #FlockingHappy movement has been a huge success, as we are overwhelmed with the number of consumers the campaign has reached," said Leah Garces, US Director of Compassion in World Farming. "Compassion's innovative work focuses on positively transforming the public's attitude on food policy and farming, and with the help of the happy egg co.'s generous donation, we can actively continue improving the lives of farm animals. We cannot thank the happy egg co. enough for its support and its ongoing commitment to animal and hen welfare."

About Compassion in World Farming
Compassion in World Farming is the leading farm animal welfare charity. It was founded over 40 years ago by a British farmer who became horrified by the development of modern, intensive factory farming. Today, they campaign peacefully, on a global scale to end all factory farming practices. Their undercover investigations have exposed the reality of modern intensive farming systems and brought the plight of farm animals to the attention of the world's media. They believe that farm animals should not and need not suffer.
