The Container Store Lands #16 on FORTUNE's List of "100 Best Companies to Work For"
Retailer and employee first company makes list for 14th consecutive year
DALLAS, Jan. 16, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The Container Store, the nation's originator and leading retailer of storage and organization products, announces its #16 ranking on FORTUNE magazine's annual list of "100 Best Companies to Work For." The announcement marks 14 consecutive years for the retailer on the employer of choice list.
The list was revealed this morning on FORTUNE's iPad App. Details and features on the honored companies will go online tomorrow, January 17, at Fortune.com/BestCompanies. "Sustaining a position on this employer of choice list is truly one of our proudest accomplishments. And to go up on the list this year is truly fantastic! Our employees are our #1 priority. If employees are ecstatic then customers are ecstatic and so are all of our other stakeholders - vendors, community partners, shareholders - everyone!" said Kip Tindell, Chairman and CEO of The Container Store. "We're thrilled to continue to operate our business in the manner of Conscious Capitalism - putting a purpose before profits and never forgetting what got us here in the first place - our devotion to great people and a happy workplace."

To pick the 100 Best Companies to Work For, FORTUNE partners with the Great Place to Work Institute to conduct the most extensive employee survey in corporate America. Two-thirds of a company's score is based on the results of the Institute's Trust Index survey, which is sent to a random sample of employees from each company. The survey asks questions related to their attitudes about management's credibility, job satisfaction, and camaraderie. The other third of the scoring is based on the company's responses to the Institute's Culture Audit, which includes detailed questions about pay and benefit programs and a series of open-ended questions about hiring practices, internal communications, training, recognition programs and diversity efforts. Any company that is at least seven years old with more than 1,000 U.S. employees is eligible.
The Container Store originated the storage and organization category of retailing when it opened its first location in Dallas in 1978. Today, the retailer's mission remains the same: to offer customers impeccable customer service and innovative products, which save space and, ultimately, save precious time. Guided by The Container Store's "do unto others" business philosophies - called Foundation Principles - the company has cultivated and maintained a strong, employee-first culture for its 6,000 employees. This culture and other company best practices, including unprecedented levels of customer service, its training programs that offer more than 263 hours of training in a full-time employee's first year and its unique and innovative approach to recruiting have garnered tremendous national attention for the retailer.
