The Chicago School of Professional Psychology Appoints First Provost

LOS ANGELES, June 1, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Chicago School of Professional Psychology today announces the promotion of Chief Academic Officer Joseph Martin Stevenson, Ph.D. as its first provost. As Provost, Dr. Stevenson will work with The Chicago School's President Michele Nealon-Woods, Psy.D., to streamline operations between Academic Affairs and other areas and guide The Chicago School's strategy to be recognized as the pre-eminent nonprofit university for professional psychology, and related behavioral and health sciences.

Dr. Stevenson joined The Chicago School's executive leadership team as Chief Academic Officer and Vice President for Academic Affairs in June 2014.

Dr. Stevenson is an advocate of student persistence toward degree completion and a proponent of strategic enrollment management. As such, some of his initial priorities as Provost, will be to introduce the concept of "Professorial Portfolio Planning" to enhance faculty development in teaching, service, and practitioner research; develop the university's "scholar-practitioner model" to combine reflective action research with responsive community service; establish a university press to publish scholarly work by both students and faculty; provision academic leadership training in the areas of budgeting, accreditation preparation, licensure and compliance, online teaching and andragogy, and effective assessment; and position all Chicago School disciplines for sustainable accreditation.

Externally, Dr. Stevenson will continue to build academic partnerships with peer institutions and build relationships that support external and extramural funding.

Prior to The Chicago School, Dr. Stevenson served as a Presidential Special Assistant at Little Priest Tribal College, and as Distinguished Scholar at Jackson State University. His wealth of administrative experience includes: Provost, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Mississippi Valley State University; Provost Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs at Jackson State University; and Campus Provost, and Campus Executive Officer at Golden Gate University's Sacramento Campus. He also served as the first Eminent Scholar in the College of Education at Florida International University in Miami.

Dr. Stevenson is founder of the world's only Executive Ph.D. in Urban Higher Education at Jackson State, and co-founder of the National Conference for STEM Women of Color at the University of California, Berkeley. He has authored 13 books, including "Empowerful Informatics: A Source for Families in Today's Economy;" published numerous scholarly articles on the arts, the sciences and higher education leadership; and is a regular contributor to the opinion pages in The Chronicle of Higher Education and Diverse Issues in Higher Education.

Dr. Stevenson holds a Ph.D in Educational Policy Management from the University of Oregon, Eugene with an emphasis on higher education; an M.S. in Curriculum and Instructional Leadership, from the University of Oregon, an M.A. in Social Science Education, and M.A. in Educational Administration, both from California State University, Sacramento.
