The British International School of New York: Middle School Mathematics Student Finishes in NYC Top Three for the Second Consecutive Year
NEW YORK, May 25, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- They may have a comparatively small middle school, but within its halls you'll find plenty of individual talent. Christopher Volkovitsch one of the students in Year 8 (Grade 7), is one such individual who has consistently demonstrated his outstanding mathematical ability through the New York Mathematics League.
"I really enjoy mathematics and taking part in the Mathematics League contests, as the questions are very challenging and this is a good way to compare students across the state and region. I am very pleased with my results for the past two years."
The Math League was formed in 1977 by Steven R. Conrad and Daniel Flegler, who were both honored by President Ronald Reagan as recipients of Presidential awards for, "Excellence in Mathematics Teaching." Over one million students from the United States and Canada participate in Math League Contests each year. Every contest has questions from different areas of mathematics and the goal is to encourage student interest and confidence in mathematics.
During the 2009-2010 school year Christopher, while in Year 7, finished joint 7th in New York State and joint 2nd in Manhattan. This school year he finished joint 10th in the State and joint 3rd in Manhattan.
This comes as no surprise to Christopher's Mathematics teacher, Mr. Davies, who noticed Chris's incredible talent the first time they met.
"I had no doubt that Christopher would finish high in the Mathematics League standings, as he is a very conscientious, dedicated pupil, with a natural mathematical ability. He also uses his gift to help other students in the class and this has raised the profile of the subject and removed some of the math-phobia that is all too prominent among middle school students."
And Across the Ocean:
Two students at Abercorn School in London, sister school to The British International School of New York, have successfully reached the finals in Maths Association's Annual Primary Maths Challenge. This year 84,000 children in Years 5 and 6 took part nationwide, but only 1009 gained marks sufficiently high to qualify as a finalist. Congratulations to Brooke and Adam!
