The Alzheimer's Association Receives Major Pledge From The TJX Companies, Inc.
Multi-National Retailer Recognizes Massive Impact of Alzheimer's on its Associates, Customers and Communities
CHICAGO, April 21, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- According to the 2011 Alzheimer's Disease Facts and Figures report, as many as 5.4 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease. Given the prevalence of Alzheimer's, approximately one in every three people knows someone with the disease. On behalf of its retail divisions, including T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods in the U.S., Winners, HomeSense, Marshalls and STYLESENSE in Canada, and T.K. Maxx and HomeSense in Europe, more than 162,000 Associates, and millions of customers, The TJX Companies, Inc. has committed a major, multi-year pledge of $1 million to benefit the Alzheimer's Association, the world's leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer's care, support and research, over the upcoming three-year period.
Carol Meyrowitz, TJX Chief Executive Officer, stated, "I am so proud of TJX's support of the Alzheimer's Association. Alzheimer's is a terrible disease that affects not only those who suffer from the disease, but their families and caregivers, as well. Globally, it has touched so many of our Associates' and customers' lives. We believe that as a 'Neighbor of Choice,' our support will help the Alzheimer's Association to achieve its mission to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health."
TJX has also joined hundreds of other companies throughout the U.S. in participating in the Alzheimer's Association Early Detection Alliance (AEDA). As a Champion of the AEDA, TJX will help educate its Associates about Alzheimer's disease, the warning signs of Alzheimer's and the importance of early detection. TJX will also make resources available to Associates and customers to help them find information about caring for people living with Alzheimer's.
"We applaud TJX for helping to advance the mission of the Alzheimer's Association here in the U.S. and internationally," said Angela Geiger, Chief Strategy Officer for the Alzheimer's Association. "Given the enormous size and cost of the Alzheimer's epidemic, corporations must step up and help provide information and resources to the millions of families impacted by Alzheimer's."
The Alzheimer's Association invites companies nationwide to support the cause and join the AEDA at www.alz.org/aeda.
