Event featured an Expo Hall, the Safety and Training Conference and the Lineman's Rodeo Competition
OVERLAND PARK, Kan., Nov. 1, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The International Lineman's Rodeo & Expo, produced by Transmission & Distribution World in conjunction with the Lineman's Rodeo Association, today announced the successful wrap up of its 34th annual event. The Expo hosted 3,250 attendees, a record breaking number October 11-13, 2017 in Kansas.
Florence Torres, Managing Director, Energy & Buildings said, "Each year we are humbled and honored to play a part in the International Lineman's Rodeo. The passion and pride shown by the Association Board, the competitors and their families and the industry service providers is infectious. We uphold the values of 'For the Linemen' in all that we do."
Dale Warman, Co-chairman, Board of Directors, International Lineman's Rodeo Association added, "The odds were stacked up against us when two hurricanes hit. We weren't sure what the impact was going to be on the event when so many of our attendees were out helping get the power restored. I think that it really made the event even more meaningful and rewarding for the competitors to come have a good time with co-workers and their families after being gone working storms for several weeks. This year marked our largest event in history and was a great success."
The Expo Hall, the largest in the event's history, featured over 135 exhibiting companies, 33 of which were first time exhibitors. The utility industry has a rich history of product innovation and manufacturers showcased products to help linemen improve their productivity and safety.
The two-day Safety and Training Conference drew 278 attendees. The mission of the conference is help improve the safe performance of line work. By sharing personal injury stories and presentations about successful safety programs, presenters discussed the importance of not taking shortcuts, wearing the proper personal protective equipment and following protocols.
The Lineman's Rodeo Competition attracts the best linemen from around the world to compete in events based on traditional lineman tasks and skills. Over 238 teams and 313 apprentices totaling 1,027 competitors participated in a full day of determining the best of the best. Thirty-three years ago, in 1984, a very small group of individuals including Tom White, the President of TWSCO, a linework materials vendor, Dale Warman, a supervisor for Kansas City Power and Light, and Charlie Young, a supervisor for Southwest Line Construction organized the first ever National Lineman's rodeo. The primary purposes of the event then as now was to help maintain a focus on safety and safe work practices, to provide a forum for the public to better understand and recognize the technical craft skills the linemen have, and to provide an opportunity for the professionals craftspeople in the linework trade to receive recognition for their skills. The Association is organized for the purpose of engaging in charitable, educational, and other nonprofit lawful activities, including, without limitation, teaching safety in and around electrical wiring, encouraging and building cost reducing efficiency and proficiency in the work environment, building relationships of trust and teaching teamwork techniques, and sharing ideas to bring innovation to industry generally (including the electrical power distribution industry). The foregoing purposes are achieved through, among other things, regular publications and the operation and organization of the International Lineman's Rodeo (the "Rodeo"), an annual event at which various presentations and contests are conducted. It shall be the responsibility of the Board of Directors to sponsor and administer the Rodeo.
