ThanksUSA Awards Scholarships to Military Families With the Help of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores
WASHINGTON, Sept. 17 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- ThanksUSA, a charitable effort to mobilize Americans to "thank" our active-duty troops through need-based scholarships, recently distributed 150 scholarship letters worth $3,000 each to the spouses and children of active-duty military. Through a $25,000 contribution from the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) Foundation, eight scholarships went specifically to students majoring in pharmacy and related fields.
"We're honored to help support American's men and women in uniform and their families, as well as America's future generation of pharmacists," said NACDS Foundation President Edith Rosato, R.Ph., IOM.
"The generosity of corporate donors such as the National Association of Chain Drug Stores Foundation has allowed us to award 150 scholarships this month to America's military families, with additional scholarship letters to be distributed later this year," said Michele Stork, executive director of ThanksUSA. "Pharmacology is a valuable area of study, and, in league with the NACDS Foundation, we're pleased to be able to help those students achieve their educational dreams."
ThanksUSA began in 2005 when two Virginia schoolgirls sought to mobilize Americans to thank active-duty troops for defending our freedoms. Since 2006, ThanksUSA has awarded more than $6 million in need-based, post-secondary scholarships to nearly 2,200 spouses and children of military members serving on active-duty status. Scholarships have been awarded in all 50 states and the District of Columbia to families representing all branches of the Armed Forces, including the National Guard and Reserves, and the families of the wounded and fallen.
Through the continued support from donors such as the ESA Foundation, Blavatnik Family Foundation, The Boeing Company, CSC, WJB Capital, KPMG LLP, The Pershing Square Foundation, Intelligent Decisions, Goldman Sachs and others, need-based scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to the spouses and children of active-duty military personnel. Recipients are selected on the basis of financial need, demonstrated leadership, and participation in school and community activities.
