Texas' Varied Energy Resources: Together at Last in an "All-of-the-Above" Energy World?

SAN ANTONIO, Oct. 24, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Blessed with abundant sun, wind, and biomass -- as well as ample fossil fuel resources - Texas is ground zero for the "all-of-the-above" energy strategy being pursued nationally. 

What does "all of the above" mean to Texas and its renewable energy industry?  Are there new markets to be tapped in the natural complementarily with natural gas?  What are the opportunities and challenges?

These are the issues to be addressed by a star-studded line-up of expert speakers at the Texas Renewable Energy Industries Association's (TREIA) upcoming conference, titled "Renewable Energy in an 'All-of-the-Above' World." The event will be held November 11-13 at the Omni Colonnade in San Antonio – a city whose economic foundation itself is built on a combination of industries and interests.

Headlining the event and addressing the "all-of-the-above" theme will be Dr. Dan Arvizu, Director of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado.  Doyle Beneby, President and Chief Executive Officer of CPS Energy, will speak to the mix of renewables and fossil fuels in the context of an "all-of-the-above" utility generating portfolio.

Dr. Dan Reicher will frame the discussion of opportunities for collaboration between renewable energy and fossil fuels in his talk titled "Renewables and Fossil Fuels: A Fit or a Fight?"  Reicher formerly served as DOE Assistant Secretary and currently is Executive Director of the Steyer-Taylor Center for Energy Policy and Finance at Stanford University.  

"Going forward, Texas will reap huge economic and environmental benefits as the market learns how natural gas and renewables complement each other," stated former State Senator Kipp Averitt.  Chairman of the Texas Clean Energy Coalition, Averitt is among the speakers on this topic. 

Jim Gillingham of Valero, Peter Janus of Microsoft, Dr. Jurgen Weiss of the Brattle Group, David Veach of S&C Electric, and Dr. Doug Arent of the Joint Institute for Strategic Energy Analysis will round out the slate of expert speakers on the topic of renewable energy opportunities related to fossil fuels.  Les Shephard, Texas Sustainable Energy Research Institute, will moderate the session.
