Teradata Announces 2010 For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology College Scholarship Winners

ATLANTA, Aug. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Teradata Corporation (NYSE: TDC), the world's largest company solely focused on data warehousing and enterprise analytics, today announced the 2010 winners of the Teradata For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) scholarship program. All winners participated on Teradata teams in the FIRST Robotics Competition held in 2010.

"It's exciting to see what these students have accomplished already in their lives. They are great academic achievers and leaders in their schools or community," said Susan Baxley, director of community relations, Teradata Corporation. "They were successful in the FIRST Robotics competition, where by working in teams, they had to secure funds and then work with limited resources and within a time period to build and program a robot that performs specific tasks. We're pleased to support these students as they pursue a future in science and technology and wish them much success as they move into their college careers."

High school seniors who demonstrate leadership skills in school or their community and who take part in a Teradata-sponsored FIRST Robotics Competition or FIRST Tech Challenge are eligible to apply for a scholarship  Students must plan to major in a science, technology, engineering or math discipline at an accredited four-year college or university.

Teradata also is a strong supporter of the FIRST LEGO League, where elementary and middle-school students use LEGOs to build robots that complete tasks.  

The following students earned scholarships for their academic achievements and significant contributions to their school and community:

• Austin Anderson plans to attend the University of Colorado Boulder to study aerospace engineering. While at Westview High School in Poway, Calif., Anderson was a member of the National Honor Society, was named an Advanced Placement Scholar and won Senior of the Year in the Westview Robotics Club for outstanding leadership. He plays guitar and ukulele and volunteers at his church

• John Beatty plans to major in chemical engineering at Ohio State University. His interests include football, math and science. He was on the Dean's List at Dayton Early College Academy in Dayton, Ohio, and received a senior leadership award from DECA botz, the school's FIRST Robotics Challenge team.    

• Kaeland Chatman is participating in the Leadership Education And Development Summer Engineering Institute at the Georgia Institute of Technology and plans to study mechanical engineering there this fall. While at Marietta High School in Marietta, Ga., he was a member of the National Honor Society, National Beta Club and the Math Honor Society. He volunteers in his local community.

• Garrett Frye will pursue his interest in computers at Northern Arizona University. He was on the honor roll, a member of yearbook staff, and was a house member at Escondido Charter School in Escondido, Calif.

• Gil Greenberg plans to earn a computer science degree from Southern Polytechnic State University. At Northview High School in Duluth, Ga., Greenberg earned a dual diploma for college prep and technology, graduated with honors and was named a Distinguished Graduate. His interests include iPhone development and swimming.

• Quantavius King plans to attend Tuskegee University and major in mechanical engineering. He was a member of the National Technical Honors Society and an honors student at Therrell High School in Atlanta.  

• Nikhil Ragde will major in engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology. A tennis player, he was a National Merit Scholar and an Advanced Placement Scholar and was named a Distinguished Graduate. He graduated sume cum laude from Northview High School in Duluth, Ga.    

• Matthew Zeyak plans to attend North Carolina State University and major in engineering. A graduate of Green Hope High School in Cary, NC, his interests include baseball and history. He is an Eagle Scout and a North Carolina Scholar.
