NEW YORK, Oct. 13, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The attorneys at Bernstein Liebhard LLP are now evaluating potential teething tablet lawsuits (http://www.rxinjuryhelp.com/teething-tablet/lawsuit/) involving injuries and deaths that may be associated with the use of homeopathic teething pills and gels. On September 30th, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) warned that these products may pose a risk to infants and children. It has since been revealed that homeopathic teething remedies have been implicated in more than 400 adverse event reports since 2010, including 10 infant deaths. While the FDA has not yet concluded that these teething tablets and pills were, in fact, responsible for the reported adverse events, the agency has cautioned against their use.
"Parents should be able to trust that the products they give to their children are safe and effective. The recent news surrounding homeopathic teething remedies is extremely disturbing," says Sandy A. Liebhard, a partner at Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is now offering free, no-obligation legal reviews to families whose children may have been harmed by homeopathic teething medications.
FDA Warning for Homeopathic Teething Tablets
According to the FDA, homeopathic teething tablets and gels are marketed by Hyland's, Baby Orajel Naturals and others. Such products have not been evaluated or approved by the agency for safety or efficacy, and the FDA has said it is also not aware of any proven health benefit associated with these remedies. However, the agency is not issuing a teething tablet recall at this time.
Parents and caregivers who do use these products should seek medical attention if their child experiences:
- Seizures
- Difficulty breathing
- Lethargy
- Excessive sleepiness
- Muscle weakness
- Skin flushing
- Constipation
- Difficulty urinating
- Agitation
Following the FDA's September 30th alert, CVS announced that it was voluntarily withdrawing all homeopathic teething gels and tablets from its store shells. Products affected by the CVS action include:
- Baby Orajel Naturals Gel for Teething Pain, .33 oz
- Baby Orajel Naturals Gel for Teething Pain Nighttime Formula, .33 oz
- Baby Orajel Naturals Tablets for Teething Pain, 125 Count
- CVS Homeopathic Infant's Teething Tablet, 135 Count
- CVS Homeopathic Infants' Teething Liquid, .85 oz
- Hyland's Baby Nighttime Teething Tablets, 135 Count
- Hyland's Baby Teething Gel, .5 oz
- Hyland's Baby Teething Tablets, 13 Count
- Hyland's Baby Teething Tablets, 135 Count
- Hyland's Teething Gel, .33 oz
Hyland's has announced that it will no longer market its teething medications in the U.S., due to "confusion among parents and limited access to the medicines" created by the FDA's action.
In 2010, Hyland's did issue a voluntary recall for its teething tablets, after the products were linked to a number of adverse events typical of belladonna toxicity. The FDA determined that the pills contained inconsistent amounts of this ingredient, which can be poisonous if ingested in large amounts.
Compensation may be available to the families of children who were allegedly harmed by homeopathic teething pills and gels. To learn more about filing a teething tablet lawsuit, please visit Bernstein Liebhard LLP's website, or call 800-511-5092 to arrange for a free, no obligation case review.
