Teenage Cancer Trust is running a seven-day campaign from 14th - 20th October 2013 in order to raise awareness of cancer within young people. The main aim of the campaign is to learn, share and give to help raise awareness and help young people who are already suffering because of cancer.
Whilst cancer is relatively rare in teens in comparison to adults, around seven young people aged between 13 and 24 are diagnosed with cancer every day in the UK. According to the Office for National Statistics, cancer is the leading non-accidental cause of death in young people with 2,214 teenagers and young adults in the UK diagnosed between 2008 and 2010.
Teenage Cancer Action Week wants everybody to get to know their bodies and look out for any changes or signs that are persistent and explained such as a pain, a lump, bump or swelling, significant weight loss or changes in a mole. Encouraging the public to carry out regular body checks will help catch cancer before it is too late. In most cases there is probably nothing to worry about, however it is always best to get advice from a GP to be on the safe side.
The people behind the campaign want everybody to share the five signs of cancer with their friends and family in order to raise awareness. Teachers are encouraged to give lessons on the common signs and hand out leaflets so children and young adults can understand what cancer is, how to spot it and who to turn to.
The public can show their support by purchasing an official Teenage Cancer Trust wristband in light blue, dark blue or red for £1 at Tony Pryce Sports - 100% of the proceeds will go to the Teenage Cancer Trust charity.
Please share this and help raise awareness for the Teenage Cancer Trust.
