The U.S. Supreme Court last year upheld President Obama's Affordable Care Act (ACA), paving the way for an overhaul of the U.S. healthcare sector. One of the most controversial features of the ACA is a 2.3% excise tax on all U.S. sales of medical devices. The tax went into effect on January 1, 2013. However, the tax has been opposed by medical device companies which say that they will not gain enough new customers from the reform to offset higher costs because of the excise tax. Earlier this year, the Senate voted 79-20 to repeal the 2.3% excise tax. On Wednesday, June 19, 2013, the healthcare sector ended mostly lower, tracking losses in the broader market which fell sharply following the release of Federal Reserve's latest monetary policy statement. The major movers in the sector included Life Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ: LIFE), Opko Health Inc. (NYSE: OPK), Brookdale Senior Living Inc. (NYSE: BKD), The Medicines Company (NASDAQ: MDCO), and DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc. (NYSE: DVA). All these companies are tracked by AAAResearchReports.com.
