SAN FRANCISCO, June 7, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- TeamViewer, the remote log-in service, recently admitted that users' accounts have been hacked, with money drained from online accounts. But the company maintains that its network has not been breached—instead, TeamViewer pins the blame on sloppy password practices and the fallout from other major breaches. In a post on Peerlyst (https://www.peerlyst.com), a community member who goes by the screen name NewsWatcher analyzes the claims and counterclaims to try to sort out the truth.

As TeamViewer spokespeople have pointed out, there have been massive breaches at other sites, notably the 2012 breach of LinkedIn's network, in which approximately 167 million users' passwords and personal information was stolen. As that data continues to circulate among cybercriminals, the fallout continues—including, TeamViewer maintains, the ongoing cyberattacks on its users.
In a piece entitled "Waves of Crime Following the LinkedIn Breach—TeamViewer Users Getting Hacked Due to Password Reuse," NewsWatcher asserts that TeamViewer's claims have merit: "It seems very likely that password reuse across different sites is now causing a major payday for cybercriminals." NewsWatcher goes on to observe that, "The fact that LinkedIn got hacked is probably costing another company—TeamViewer—a lot of money right now as people stop using the service."
