TeamHealth Receives UnitedHealth Group's Apex Award
Award Recognizes Innovative Employer Wellness Program
KNOXVILLE, Tenn., Dec. 20, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- TeamHealth Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: TMH), received a 2010 Apex Award for enhancing its "LiveWell" company wellness program.
The Apex Award, an honor given by health and well-being company UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH), is presented to employers in recognition of exceptionally innovative solutions to healthcare challenges.
LiveWell was created to help TeamHealth employees adopt healthier lifestyles and reduce their medical costs. TeamHealth was one of seven organizations in the nation to receive the award.
TeamHealth developed a new strategy that includes an online health risk assessment linking employees to appropriate exercise, nutrition and weight-loss programs and information. The new LiveWell website offers expanded disease management programs for employees with diabetes, asthma and cardiac conditions, as well as information on how to access biometric screenings and flu shots.
Since the launch of the enhanced wellness program, 160 employees have stopped smoking through the tobacco-cessation program, and more than 80 percent of eligible women have participated in the healthy pregnancy program.
"As a company, we're committed to educating our employees on ways to stay healthy," said Greg Roth, Chief Executive Officer at TeamHealth. "Last year we evaluated our current wellness program and decided to make some changes to increase employee participation. With employees scattered across 45 states, and some of them without Internet access during the day, we faced some challenges communicating information about the direct effects of unhealthy lifestyle choices on their personal medical costs as well as those being absorbed by TeamHealth."
"These efforts have TeamHealth on track to meet our long-term goals to maintain a healthy work force and reduce healthcare costs," said Roth. "We will continue to provide support to our employees and their family members to further emphasize our culture of good health."
Now in its sixth year, the Apex Awards program is sponsored by UnitedHealth Group. UnitedHealth Group employer customers are eligible to apply for an Apex Award, and an independent judging panel composed of leaders from across the healthcare industry, including the previous year's winners, selects the winners based on employers' innovative approaches to specific healthcare challenges.
