Tax Analysts Reporter Sheds Light on Employer Identification Number Theft and Tax Refund Fraud Issues, Receives Honorable Book Dedication
FALLS CHURCH, Va., March 25, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Tax Analysts, the nonprofit provider of federal, state, and international tax news and analysis, today announced that Eric Kroh, a reporter for its Tax Notes magazine and Tax Notes Today online publication, has been honored with a book dedication for his effort to educate readers on employer identification number (EIN) theft for use in tax-refund-related fraud.
Kroh's article, "EIN Theft Seen as Plague on Large Employers," describes the severity of EIN fraud and highlights various procedures and programs that may protect against it. The article notes that despite the increasing amount of EIN theft, there is little guidance from the IRS about the measures to take following a theft, and that resolving the problem could take up to a year.
"It is a great privilege and an honor for our journalism to be recognized for its influence on the tax policy world," Kroh said. "It reinforces my commitment to pursuing stories that inform and provide value for our readers."
Debera Salam, author of the book Principles of Payroll Administration: The Complete Learning and Reference Guide, which is designed for payroll professionals and those who support the payroll function, has dedicated the 2013 edition of the book to Kroh. Commenting on his work in demonstrating the burden businesses face when they become victims of identify theft and tax refund fraud, Salam noted, "The subject of the impact of tax refund scams on employers has not been sufficiently explored. My appreciation is extended to Eric for being one of the first to tackle this complex angle and for assisting in bringing the issue to light."
Since joining Tax Analysts in 2008, Kroh has covered complex tax policy issues, including developments on Capitol Hill and at the IRS. He was a 2008 Carnegie-Knight News 21 Journalism Fellow, where he participated in a national investigative journalism project examining environmental topics in the 2008 elections. Kroh has a BA in liberal arts from St. John's College and an MS in journalism from Northwestern University.
