SunCal Signs Project Labor Agreement with Laborers' Local 304 for Oak Knoll Development in Oakland
OAKLAND, Calif., June 15, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- SunCal, the master developer of the proposed 187-acre Oak Knoll community in the Oakland Hills, has entered into a project labor agreement (PLA) with the Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA) Local 304, it was announced today by SunCal and LIUNA officials.
"We are very pleased to enter into this agreement with Laborers' Local 304," said David Soyka, Senior Vice President, SunCal. "This partnership will ensure the benefits accrued from our project are fairly shared with local stakeholders to provide family-supporting wages."
The agreement between the developer and Local 304 does not prevent other trades, regardless of affiliation, that are involved in construction of houses, from seeking agreements from the project's future homebuilders. SunCal supports a cooperative atmosphere with labor groups and recognizes the need to make middle-class jobs – especially in Oakland, for Oaklanders - a priority as the development of Oak Knoll moves forward.
"With this PLA, SunCal reaffirms its commitment to fair wages that will enable our members to provide for their families, and job training for people from the local community," said Fernando Estrada, Business Manager, Laborers' Local 304. "Oak Knoll will create construction jobs over the several years it will take to build out this project, and we're pleased to have reached an agreement with the developer." The Laborers' Local 304 is a Construction and General Laborers local union that covers Alameda County.
"I'm glad to see that SunCal is working with organized labor on this project within my district," said Larry Reid, Oakland City Council President. "Oak Knoll will transform the vacant former Naval Hospital site and will bring great benefits to Oakland, including jobs, tax revenues for the City and 76 acres of public open space, parks and trails that all Oakland residents can use."
Covering 187 acres, Oak Knoll is planned to feature 935 homes including single-family residences, town homes and estate homes; 72,000 square feet of commercial retail uses in a village center and 76 acres of public parks, open space and publicly accessible trails. The community will also include a creek running through the property that will be restored to its natural condition; a new community center that will be available to residents and the general public; and a memorial honoring military personnel who served or were treated at the Naval Hospital.
