Sudan Honors its Commitment: Historic Referendum on Schedule
WASHINGTON, Jan. 9, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A defining moment in Sudan's history has arrived, when nearly 4 million Southern Sudanese are to line up at the polls to vote for either unity of Sudan or secession. This represents a critical benchmark and indeed the final stage in the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) signed in 2005 that ushered in peace when it effectively brought an end to a five decade long war. As part of their search for a lasting solution, the Sudanese aim at consolidating this peace by recognizing the basic right to Self-determination through today's exercise.
It has undoubtedly been a long and an arduous journey, one expectedly fraught with political adversities. But the Sudanese have been able to overcome the essential hurdles to get to this monumental point; a place some pessimists doubted, and war mongers -- anti Sudan groups -- had hoped would never arrive. Through diligence and full commitment to the loftier vision of peace the parties forged ahead and as a result Sudan today faces the promise of that long odyssey.
Whatever the outcome, it will be recognized, upheld and honored by all, as reiterated by President Bashir during his visit to Juba on Tuesday. A fair conduct of this exercise will reflect the legitimate aspirations of the people, and thus the world must only work to ensure that the process continues in a manner that doesn't jeopardize or call into question its integrity. The will of the Sudanese and aspiration must freely be expressed and honored. This is the only guarantee of peace!
In search of a brighter future for its people, Sudan, whatever the result of the referendum, will continue to be an active member of the international community fully committed to its pledges as it works to foster peace in the region and the world over.
