DES MOINES, Iowa, Feb. 22, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Success for All Foundation, an organization that works with schools to improve literacy for all at-risk students, showcased its PowerTeaching Math program to students and educators at the Iowa Capitol building on Thursday, February 16 at Iowa STEM DAY.
Students and teachers from Kingsley Pierson Middle School, with representatives from Success for All, spent the day at the Capitol, sharing the incredible success they have had using the PowerTeaching Math (PTM) program that teaches Algebra 1 to grades 6-8.
"The state of Iowa is focused on increasing student achievement in the STEM areas of study. The state's groundbreaking focus on this initiative has resulted in great achievements for students in Iowa. The Success for All Foundation's PowerTeaching Math program is one of the 9 programs that are recommended by the state under this initiative," said Dr. Nancy Madden, the CEO of Success for All Foundation, based in Baltimore.
During the class, students form teams and discuss how to solve math problems with the help of the teacher. Because of the teamwork concept, teachers have more time to work with students. The lesson plan works in small groups as well as in large groups.
"We are working to expand the reach of Success for All to all 50 states and we are delighted that the State of Iowa is adopting this highly successful program," said Dr. Madden.
About PowerTeaching Math
Developed by Johns Hopkins Researchers, PowerTeaching Math (PTM) is the leader in cooperative learning mathematics instruction helping teachers transform their classrooms environments to engage ALL students. PowerTeaching Math provides teachers with the tools necessary to enhance their mathematics instruction and to grow professionally. It prepares students for the rigorous demands of high school so they will continue to succeed and feel confident in their math abilities.
PTM uses a research-proven cooperative structure to help teachers create a learning environment in which students support each other's learning through discussion of challenges and errors, on-the-spot explanations and motivation to contribute to the success of the team. In several independent studies, students participating in the program gained a full year more than students in a randomized comparison group and had a greater liking of math and higher self-concept in math. PTM's cooperative learning structure teaches students to think critically and problem solve, communicate efficiently and collaborate effectively with their peers. Well-implemented cooperative learning environments provide teachers with the freedom to observe, interact and assess where the students are and allows them to adapt lessons and add targeted instruction as needed in real time.
Through PTM, middle school teachers will provide their students with a "toolbox" of resources they can apply to any challenge they face in high school and beyond. These skills are not only critical for success in math but for success in all STEM fields. No student gets left behind, everyone stays on task, and each student is held accountable for his or her own learning. PTM provides teachers the means to prepare tomorrow's leaders.
The program provides:
- A set of teacher student materials, ongoing student assessment for each cycle (teacher materials include scope and sequence)
- Online access to lessons and social networking with other PowerTeacher Mathematics teachers in the building,
- Ongoing student assessment for each cycle
- A flash drive that includes all lessons for each grade level including award winning media clips for concept learning
- On-site support from an experienced PowerTeaching Math coach during the school year.
- One registration and travel stipend for the Experienced Sites Conference held in Phoenix in February 11-14, 2018
To implement the program in Iowa, schools must apply for STEM Scale-Up Award by March 3, 2017. Schools must also participate in on-site support visits and attend a regional program prior to the start of school.
