Facebook Inc. Analyst Notes
On March 25, 2014, Facebook Inc. (Facebook) announced the acquisition of the immersive virtual reality technology company, Oculus VR, Inc. (Oculus), for $2 billion. Facebook intends to broaden Oculus' existing advantage in gaming to new verticals, including communications, media and entertainment, education and other. Commenting the acquisition, Facebook, CEO, Mark Zuckerberg said, "Mobile is the platform of today, and now we're also getting ready for the platforms of tomorrow. Oculus has the chance to create the most social platform ever, and change the way we work, play and communicate." The deal is expected to close in Q2 2014 and would be financed partly by cash, $400 million, and the residual by 23.1 million shares of Facebook common stock which are valued at $1.6 billion based on the average closing price of the 20 trading days foregoing March 21, 2014 of $69.35 per share. Microsoft Corporation Analyst Notes
On March 27, 2014, Microsoft Corporation (Microsoft) revealed expansion of cloud services for mobile scenarios with newer and updated applications and services such as Microsoft Office for iPad and free Office Mobile applications for Apple iPhone and Android phones. Microsoft also announced the Enterprise Mobility Suite, and Microsoft Azure Active Directory Premium and enhancements to Windows Intune. Commenting on the development, Satya Nadella, CEO, said, "Microsoft is focused on delivering the cloud for everyone, on every device. It's a unique approach that centers on people - enabling the devices you love, work with the services you love, and in a way that works for IT and developers." Microsoft Office for iPad is now available in 29 languages. In a separate news article, on March 31, 2014, Reuters reported senior-level management changes by Nadella who has named three executives to its cloud, devices and Xbox gaming divisions. The report further informs that Scott Guthrie has been promoted to the head of the cloud and enterprise group, while Stephen Elopzes, former Nokia Oyj CEO, will join as EVP of the devices group and Phil Spencer has been named to lead its Xbox operations. AT&T Inc. Analyst Notes
On March 31, 2014, the Board of Directors of AT&T Inc. (AT&T) approved the buyback of 300 million shares, representing 6% of AT&T common shares outstanding, with no expiration date. This share repurchase program is over and above the three other 300 million share repurchase authorizations in December 2010, July 2012 and March 2013. As stated, the Company completed repurchases under the 2012 share authorization last year. Commenting the repurchase, AT&T Chairman and CEO Randall Stephenson said, "The board's authorization reaffirms our confidence in the strength of the business and our commitment to returning value to our shareholders while investing in our networks and operations." According to AT&T, the Company repurchased nearly 175 million of its shares through March 28, 2014, under its March 2013 buyback program. AT&T has repurchased 775 million of its shares, nearly 13% of shares outstanding, since the Company began buying back shares in 2012. Verizon Communications Inc. Analyst Notes
On March 31, 2014, Verizon Communications Inc. (Verizon) issued a press release detailing investments of more than $348 million in Texas' Wireline Telecommunications Infrastructure in 2013. According to Verizon, this investment would help the Company to meet the inclining customer's demand for faster broadband, high-quality video and sophisticated communications in the area.
