Statement From MyGoodDeed Regarding the Planned Burning of the Quran on the Sacred Anniversary of September 11.
NEW YORK, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In 2003 more than 20 leaders of the 9/11 community throughout the nation united around the idea of establishing September 11 as a "National Day of Service and Remembrance" (911dayofservice.org) as a tribute to those lost and heroic. The idea was to recall the remarkable spirit of service and unity that was shared throughout the country, and to create a day of peaceful reflection, remembrance and service as a way to honor those killed and injured on 9/11 and those who rose in service to restore our nation after the attacks.
This coming Saturday, following Congressional passage of legislation in 2009 that officially designated the anniversary of 9/11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance, millions are expected to pay tribute and remember by performing good deeds, adopting charities, and engaging in remembrance and service in observance of the 9th anniversary of the attacks. Individuals can post their good deeds and adopt causes at 911dayofservice.org.
The nonprofit organization that organizes the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance on behalf of the 9/11 community, MyGoodDeed, issued the following statement against the planned burning of the Quran on 9/11 and in support of General David Petraeus' objection to it and his warning that the planned burning of the Quran on 9/11 would put the lives of American military personnel in danger:
"The recently announced plan by a church organization in Florida to use 9/11 as a day to burn the Quran dishonors the memories of those lost on 9/11 and constitutes a corruption of what many members of the 9/11 community hope Americans would do on that day -- to engage in prayer, remembrance and voluntary service in tribute to those lost. Publicly burning the Quran or any other religious document on the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance or at any other time is unacceptable and abhorrent, and is an insult to the victims of 9/11 and the many brave individuals who have risen in defense of our nation."
