SportsManias Reaches 2.5 Million Unique Monthly Visitors
With veteran hires from CBSSports.com, $3.5M in added funding, and new media partners, SportsManias continues to re-shape sports journalism
MIAMI, Feb. 19, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- SportsManias, the diehard sports fan's go-to source for team and league news, announced today that its web and mobile apps now receive over 2.5 million unique monthly visitors, up from 950,000 one year ago. In the last six months, SportsManias has added 1,000 sources to its network, bringing the total to over 4,000. Today, the site aggregates more than 20,000 tweets per day, delivering real-time sports news for 735 U.S. and international sports teams. With veteran hires from CBSSports.com, a national Tailgating Tour in motion, and $3.5 in recent funding, the sports news upstart is fulfilling its mission to provide diehard fans with 24/7, personalized news unlike ever before.
"In 2014, we made huge strides in improving the SportsManias user experience, and the growth in visitors reflects that," said Vicente Fernandez, co-founder at SportsManias. "There are diehard sports fans out there who want in-depth coverage on their phone, but trying to keep with 24/7 news from dozens of websites and social networks is nearly impossible. So, we've gathered it all in one spot, delivering real-time, reliable team news. We believe the future of sports news is largely in mobile, and we're collaborating with a lot of talented journalists, publishers and media companies who also share this vision."
In recent months, SportsManias hired three key team members formerly with CBS Sports and CBSSports.com, who will improve the company's aggregated and homegrown content and expand its media partnerships. Eric Johnston, former Senior UX Designer for CBS Sports' fantasy product, is their newest acquisition, Tim Cary, former CBSSports.com Social Media Editor and a Bleacher Report columnist, joined SportsManias as Social Media Editor in December. Tim Stephens, former Deputy Managing Editor at CBSSports.com, joined SportsManias as VP of Strategic Partnerships in October. In total, the SportsManias team has doubled in size since 2014. The company also built up its new College Rep Program to 50 students across the nation whom are creating buzz among their peers, with special focus on gamedays.
SportsManias also expanded its offering in 2014 by adding original content to its existing social media and news platform. The SportsManias DieHard Tour produced shows from NFL tailgates around the country every week during this past season. Hosted by Alex Perrault, formerly known as 'MusclesGlasses' of Epic Meal Time, the YouTube series profiles the most hardcore sports fans and best tailgating cuisine around the U.S. The vlog-style series will continue its year-long tour with NBA, NHL and MLB episodes. SportsManias was invited by Whistle Sports to exclusively cover the Rose Bowl Tournament. For the XLIX Super Bowl, YouTube host, 'Big Al', concocted an epic 49-layer dip during its Homegating episode.
In June, SportsManias introduced a native mobile application with "Head-to-Head" coverage, a new second-screen experience that allows fans to follow tweets from opposing teams' beat writers as a game unfolds. The Head-to-Head display features pre-game commentary, scores, stats, live updates from the sidelines and post-game coverage. This unique functionality also allows fans to compare team stats during every game.
SportsManias has now raised a total of $4.5 million, including follow Mas Equity Partners. The funding has allowed SportsManias to make product improvements, grow its marketing efforts and build partnerships with newspapers like the Miami Herald, which has now worked with SportsManias for one year. The Pittsburgh-Tribune Review just signed up as a partner as well, with other publications in the process of joining the SportsManias program. SportsManias was also inducted as an Associated Press Sports Editors associate member and has been meeting with sports editors from across the country with discussions on growing their mutual fan base. A recent partnership with CineSport adds original video content to SportsManias feeds, further satisfying the cravings of diehard sports fans.
In fall 2015, SportsManias will host the first annual Social Media and Sports Summit in Miami, Florida, with support from the Knight Foundation as the presenting sponsor and the Miami Herald as a co-host. Rick Horrow, top sports business analyst, will be the moderator and key speaker panelists will range from sports editors, writers, interactive digital media directors to team owners and league commissioners. Details on the even will be announced in March.
