Local golf pros volunteered throughout the day providing one-on-one golf tips and used "chip shot" inflatables for instruction. At noon, a ceremonial "towel cutting," symbolizing Sport Clips' signature MVP Experience that includes a steamed towel, neck and shoulder massage and precision haircut, was held with Lake Oswego Chamber of Commerce, The First Tee and Heron Lakes Golf Club representatives. Sport Clips CEO and Founder Gordon Logan was on hand from the company's Georgetown, Texas headquarters to present a $9,000 donation to Portland's First Tee program. Logan also discussed the franchise's continued growth across the country, as well as expansion and jobs Sport Clips has brought to the Portland area.
"Sport Clips is experiencing unprecedented growth throughout the country. Here in the Portland area we've added seven new stores in the past seven months, adding 70 new jobs to the local economy," Logan noted. "We are continuing toward our goal of having 1,000 Sport Clips stores open across the country by the end of the year.
"Over the next few years, we see 70 Sport Clips stores in Oregon and Washington employing some 700 people. We enjoy becoming part of the fabric of the area by offering services and jobs, as well as business and charitable partnerships – it's a win-win for Sport Clips and the community." As a part of the company's growth, Logan says, "Each Sport Clips is locally owned and makes a commitment to be active in the communities we serve. Supporting The First Tee of Greater Portland, an organization dedicated to positive youth development through the game of golf, is an example of a partnership that benefits the community and fits well with our brand."
Also on hand for the event were Northwest Area Developers for Sport Clips Phil and Laurie Brown and local Sport Clips store owner, Bruce Milliken, who donated half the day's haircut proceeds to The First Tee. They were joined by Robyn Lorain, executive director of The Children's Course for The First Tee of Greater Portland and Nick Piovanelli from Heron Lakes Golf Club.
Sport Clips' donation will increase the program's $1,000 scholarship opportunities for selected participants from The First Tee in the coming year. Melissa Merrigan, who received a scholarship from The First Tee, spoke to the gathering about her experience and its benefits.
The day's events also included prize giveaways for golf rounds at Heron Lakes Golf Club and the Oregon Golf Association OGA course, as well as Adidas store passes, Sport Clips branded golf balls and water bottles provided by neighboring business Dick's Sporting Goods.
