SOPHIA.org and Bill Nye "The Science Guy" Launch Flipping For SOPHIA Campaign
One Lucky School to Win a Visit From Bill Nye and 30 iPads®
MINNEAPOLIS, Sept 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- SOPHIA has teamed up with Bill Nye "The Science Guy" to get kids and teachers excited about learning in and outside the classroom with the "Flipping for SOPHIA" campaign. In addition to weekly iPad® giveaways for teachers and students, one lucky school will win a visit from Bill Nye along with 30 iPads.
"With school back in session, we want students to know that there is a free resource available delivering credible content when they need it, 24/7, with no advertising," said Steve Anastasi, president and chief technology officer for SOPHIA. "SOPHIA provides one of the largest offerings of credible academic content on the Internet today. It's easy to use and we also offer free tools for teachers to enhance learning beyond the traditional school day."
To participate, teachers and students (age 13 and older) simply need to register and view one of the 25,000 FREE academic tutorials available on the site. Drawings will be held each week until December 2 where one teacher and one student win an iPad. In addition, one student or teacher will be randomly chosen to win a visit from Bill Nye and 30 iPads for their school. (Complete sweepstakes rules can be found at http://www.sophia.org/flipping-for-sophia.)
"This campaign is cool in so many ways. In addition to the prizes and the fact that I have the opportunity to personally deliver 30 iPads to a school, the real benefit is that we are offering resources that meet students where they are in the digital age," Nye said. "In addition, all of the lessons are taught by a multitude of teachers – so they are credible and if you didn't like one way a tutorial is presented, there's another and another that you can try. So students and teachers….check it out."
SOPHIA is a first-of-its-kind free online social education platform that recognizes students learn differently and offers more than 25,000 free academic tutorials taught by hundreds of teachers and education enthusiasts providing students with many ways to learn. The site differs from other online academic resources because individual concepts are taught by a variety of individuals using a mixture of text, audio, video and slideshows so students can learn the way they learn best in math, science, English and other academic subjects. It also offers learning pathways in a variety of subjects that lead students on an educational journey from one concept to the next, where they are quizzed to determine mastery before progressing to the next topic.
SOPHIA also provides free tools for teachers to flip their classroom. Teachers can participate in webinars where they will hear from their peers who flip their own classroom. In addition, they can review online lessons and create their own tutorial to earn the Flipped Classroom Certificate - a free professional development program created in cooperation with Capella University's School of Education faculty - a partner to SOPHIA that makes it possible for resources on the site to be offered at no cost. Together, Capella University and SOPHIA provide innovative teaching and learning resources for teachers to be more effective and students to be more successful.
"The flipped classroom model not only reaches students where they are in the digital age but also provides teachers with more class time to provide one-on-one assistance to each and every student," Anastasi said. "In addition, SOPHIA offers multiple tutorials on any given concept, providing students with many ways to learn."
