CHAUTAUQUA, N.Y., Dec. 20, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- A dispatcher with the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office was honored for his outstanding efforts to aid a citizen in need, using Smart911, the County's latest 9-1-1 service aimed at improving emergency response. Sheriff Joseph A. Gerace presented Michael Katta with the Smart911 SmartSave Award, which recognizes and rewards call takers, dispatchers and emergency responders who are able to effectively use information in a Smart911 Safety Profile to positively affect the outcome of an emergency.

On March 27, 2013, Katta received a 9-1-1 call for a citizen in need of medical response. A woman stated her father was having chest pains in a public parking lot and they needed assistance. Katta began processing the call to send appropriate response to the man, asking his daughter for details on their location, which she provided and quickly added, "Do you have my Smart911 profile? All of his medical information is there." Already assessing information in the Safety Profile that had appeared on his screen, Katta responded, "Yes, I do, I'm sending help right now." That was all it took to calm the caller, and ensure that proper EMS response with a full understanding of the man's medical history was dispatched to the scene.
"The caller knew her father had a detailed medical history, but in those panicked moments, it's difficult to remember all details and relay them quickly," stated Katta, a dispatcher of 20 years. "Their Safety Profile listed all of his medical notes and I was able to dispatch EMS response with that information which would help them diagnose and treat him very quickly."
In addition, Katta forwarded the patient's medical notes to the hospital where he was transported to assist in their diagnosis and treatment.
"We implemented Smart911 in Chautauqua County just over a year ago for this very reason, to save time and to save lives," said Sheriff Joseph Gerace. "Michael used this information exactly as it was intended, to aid in providing the fastest and most accurate response possible. I am so glad this citizen recognized the benefit of Smart911 and took the time to create their Safety Profile; it may have saved his life."
Smart911 allows citizens to create a free Safety Profile for their household that includes any information they want 9-1-1 and response teams to have in the event of an emergency. When a citizen makes an emergency call, their Safety Profile is automatically displayed to the 9-1-1 call taker, allowing them to send the right response teams to the right location with the right information. With Smart911, responders can be aware of many details they would not have known previously. Fire crews can arrive at a house fire knowing how many people live in the home and the location of bedrooms, EMS can be advised of allergies or specific medical conditions and police can have the photo of a missing child in seconds rather than hours.
Introduced nearly three years ago by Rave Mobile Safety, the most trusted software partner for campus and public safety, Smart911 has been adopted in 33 states and more than 450 municipalities. It has been credited with positively impacting emergency situations across the U.S., including a missing child case in Arkansas, and saving lives, such as a heart attack victim in Nashville.
Residents are encouraged to create their Safety Profile with Smart911 today to have their information immediately available to 9-1-1. Smart911 data is private and secure, is only used for emergency responses and available to the 9-1-1 system in the event of an emergency call.
