Shinola Announces The Second Edition Of Makers Monday; A Movement To Encourage Consumers To Buy American; With This Year's Partners New Balance And Cool Hunting
DETROIT, Oct. 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- American manufacturing is on the comeback trail.
Builders, artisans, craftspeople--are a growing force in the cities and towns in which we live. A new generation of Americans have emerged who are making not just as a hobby, but as a career--learning and appreciating the trades of those who came before and incorporating these values into their own lives and practices.
The blue-collar tradition has become a cause for pride again. And it will generate a little more pride than usual on Monday, December 1, 2014.
One year ago, Shinola created a national campaign called Makers Monday (www.makersmonday.com), to celebrate and support the resurgence of American making. This year again, with new partners Cool Hunting (www.coolhunting.com) and New Balance (www.newbalance.com), Shinola is urging consumers to ring in the holiday season by committing to buy an American-made product on the first Monday after Thanksgiving. As part of the initiative, consumers are also encouraged to share their pledge--and, later, their American-made purchase--on their social networks.
If every adult in America spends $10 on December 1, that adds up to 2.4 billion dollars.
But Makers Monday is more than a once-a-year campaign. We are using consumer reports and recommendations to build the Makers Monday website into an evolving, crowd-sourced database of American makers. Through feature profiles (published every Monday) and related social content, Makers Monday showcases the people behind the best American-made products--from apothecary items to apparel--and articulates some of the passion and dedication that goes into making them. Businesses not already featured on the site may request to register.
As a manufacturer of quality handmade goods, Shinola has an intimate appreciation of this process. We are proud to champion not only our own Detroit-built operation in our hometown, but also others across the country. By encouraging consumers to support these makers, we hope to foster an even stronger revival of the manufacturing-based American economy.
Boston-based New Balance is currently the only major shoe company that manufactures athletic footwear in the U.S. In 2013, 1 out of every 4 pairs of shoes New Balance sold in the U.S. was made or assembled here. Where the domestic value is at least 70%, New Balance labels its shoes Made in the USA.
