Share Our Strength® Partners with Betters Homes and Gardens® Magazine to Launch National Promotion to Fight Childhood Hunger in the U.S.
Better Homes and Gardens Clean Out for Kids™ Encourages Families across the Country to Clean Out Their Homes and Host Yard Sales to Fight Childhood Hunger
WASHINGTON, March 17, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- More than 17 million children in America face hunger today – that's almost 1 in 4 kids who don't have access to the food they need. Share Our Strength, the leading organization dedicated to ending childhood hunger in America, has partnered with Better Homes and Gardens to launch Clean Out for Kids, a national call to action campaign encouraging Americans to help raise awareness and critical funds for the cause by cleaning out their homes, hosting yard sales, and donating the proceeds. Clean Out for Kids kicks off this month and runs through the end of this year. Yard sale proceeds will benefit Share Our Strength's No Kid Hungry® Campaign, a national effort to end childhood hunger in America by 2015.
Leading home and lifestyle publication Better Homes and Gardens is the authority on helping women fulfill the passions they have for their home and the life they create there. The magazine is supporting the program in book and online with tips and step-by-step instruction on how to organize and execute a successful yard sale. To ensure each participant's yard sale goes smoothly and maximizes impact, the magazine will offer readers a free supply checklist, downloadable flyers and price tag sticker templates, which will be available online. To find out more information or to register a yard sale, visit: www.bhg.com/cleanoutforkids. The Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate community is committed to the cause, and will also be hosting events across the country to benefit Clean Out for Kids.
"Childhood hunger is an issue that is often overlooked here within the U.S. Share Our Strength has always prided itself on the innovative ways in which we work to bring awareness to the issue and this is a key example of that," says Debbie Shore, co-founder, Share Our Strength. "We're thrilled to partner with Better Homes and Gardens in creating an exciting new opportunity to help us end childhood hunger in the U.S."
According to a recent BHG survey, 74% of readers said that cutting clutter at home would help make 2011 their best year ever. "Clean Out for Kids taps into our readers' enthusiasm for home organizing as well as their inherent passion for making things better," said Gayle Butler, Editor in Chief, Better Homes and Gardens. "Hosting a yard sale is a fun and achievable way to make a significant difference in the fight to end childhood hunger. To do our part, the staff of Better Homes and Gardens will be hosting our own yard sale on June 4," added Butler, who devoted her April editor's letter to the call for action.
Those interested in participating in the program can do it online as well. Participants will be able to sell on eBay to support Share Our Strength by donating 10-100% of sales to the organization. eBay shoppers can also designate Share Our Strength as their favorite nonprofit and donate every time they checkout on eBay using PayPal: www.ebay.com/cleanoutforkids.
As part of its No Kid Hungry Campaign, Share Our Strength brings together public and private organizations to form state- and city-based partnerships that work to end childhood hunger in their specific localities. It also includes more than 300 community nonprofits across the country whose work at the local level helps make sure no kid hungry becomes a reality.
