Seattle's Union Gospel Mission Creates Massive Outdoor Exhibit of Seattle's Invisible Residents
Portraits by International Photographer Shed Light on City's Homeless
SEATTLE, Nov. 3, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The faces of Seattle's homeless will illuminate the city on November 3 and 4 when Seattle's Union Gospel Mission (Mission) presents an outdoor art installation. Captured by international photographer Lee Jeffries, the Lost Angels exhibit will project portraits of unsheltered men and women onto the facades of buildings and landmarks around the city, to draw attention to the growing number of individuals in Seattle experiencing homelessness.
Lee Jeffries, a British photographer whose portraits of the homeless have been featured in TIME magazine, CNN, the Guardian and in exhibits in Rome, Paris and London, traveled to Seattle last winter. Partnering with the Mission, which provides emergency care and long-term recovery services to the homeless, Jeffries met with and photographed some of the nearly 12,000 people in King County experiencing homelessness. The result is a series of high-contrast, intimate portraits that reveal a sense of humanity in subjects who are often invisible to a majority of the population.
"It's easy to look away when you encounter someone who's homeless but when their image is ten stories tall, it's hard to avoid," said Jeff Lilley, president of Seattle's Union Gospel Mission. "We want Seattle to look up, see the problem and to help join us in not only helping to provide shelter and food, but through longer-term solutions that give people an opportunity to thrive in life."
The Lost Angels exhibit will be screened at six locations throughout the city on the evenings of November 3 and 4. For more information or an exhibit map with the viewing locations, visit www.ugm.org/lostangels.
