SchoolTutoring Academy and iFoster Collaborate to Improve Academic Outcomes for Foster Children
Free and reduced-price private tutoring made available to foster, kinship and adopted children through iFoster
OLYMPIA, Wash., Aug. 29, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- SchoolTutoring Academy, a leader in private in-home tutoring for K-12 students, has teamed up with iFoster, a non-profit organization that brings together resources for vulnerable children and youth. This partnership will make private tutoring more accessible to the over 2.5 million foster students that iFoster supports. By enabling educational advancement, the academic and career prospects for children living in foster or kinship care are significantly improved.
With this partnership, SchoolTutoring will provide 60 minutes of free tutoring as well as significant discounts on tutoring programs to iFoster-affiliated children. The goals of this partnership are to: 1) Improve academic outcomes, self-esteem, and self-confidence; 2) Reduce the financial burden of tutoring on foster-family caregivers who currently receive less than 50% of the cost of raising a child.
"iFoster is very grateful for the partnership with SchoolTutoring. Sadly, children and youth in foster care have the worst academic outcomes of any vulnerable population. This partnership will make tutoring services within the reach of our members, making a positive difference for thousands of children." said Serita Cox, Executive Director of iFoster.
Nathan Arora, VP of SchoolTutoring Academy added, "When iFoster approached us, we put our minds together to identify a partnership that leveraged our shared resources to provide a meaningful impact to foster families."
Studies have shown that individualized instruction, such as tutoring, results in student mastery of a subject to a higher degree than the conventional classroom. In fact, educational psychologist Benjamin Bloom identified that students who benefited from individualized instruction performed two standard deviations better than their peers who learned exclusively within conventional classrooms.
