Schools Slow to Embrace the Option of Bring-Your-Own Device

ROCKVILLE, Md., Nov. 28, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- More than three quarters of educators surveyed for a new report from Simba Information, K-12 Deployment Patterns and Purchasing Plans for Computing/Display Devices 2017, said a bring-your-own device policy can help solve the issue of students having access to computers for classroom learning, but only one-third of surveyed educators said their school or district has a policy that encourages students to bring personal devices into the classroom.

"Educators may be reluctant to offer students bring-your-own device options because of problems experienced when BYOD is tried," said Karen Meaney, a senior analyst in Simba Information's Education Group. "Four-in-ten surveyed educators believe a BYOD policy can cause minor problems, while almost one-quarter of surveyed educators believe a BYOD policy can cause serious problems."

Those problems can include reliability of access, equity across students, compatibility with resources and security issues.
