SC Johnson Named Wisconsin Business Friend of the Environment for Pollution Prevention
Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce Recognizes Company for Innovative Compressed Gas Technology Usage Resulting in the Reduction of Six Million VOCs
RACINE, Wis., May 11, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- SC Johnson received a Wisconsin Business Friend of the Environment Award by the Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce (WMC). SC Johnson was recognized in the category of Pollution Prevention, in particular, for its newest aerosol production line at its Waxdale manufacturing facility in Mount Pleasant, Wis. The line uses innovative compressed gas technology to manufacture Glade® and Pledge® aerosol products.
The addition of a compressed gas line at Waxdale, the company's largest global manufacturing facility, has reduced volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by approximately six million pounds in its first year of operation. This is the equivalent of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from 1,600 passenger vehicles per year – or the CO2 emissions from 915,000 gallons of gasoline consumed*.
"As a family company, we're committed to doing what's right for people and the planet and being recognized for our efforts in our home state of Wisconsin is such an honor," said Kelly M. Semrau, Senior Vice President – Global Corporate Affairs, Communication and Sustainability. "We're constantly looking for ways to reduce our environmental footprint while at the same time improving the products that families use in their homes."
Nine companies were recognized by WMC in three categories: Pollution Prevention, Environmental Innovation and Environmental Stewardship. Within each category, small, mid-sized and large businesses were recognized. An independent panel of judges representing industry, the Department of Natural Resources, and academia selected the winners, who were recognized at a luncheon at the Country Springs Conference Center on May 10 in Pewaukee, Wis.
"Wisconsin businesses are dedicated to protecting our natural resources, not only because it's smart business, but because it's the right thing to do," said Kurt R. Bauer, WMC president/CEO. "The winners of this award are the best of the best when it comes to keeping Wisconsin clean, and creating jobs."
A History of Environmental Leadership
SC Johnson has a long history of environmental leadership. Examples include:
- Worldwide usage of innovative renewable energy sources, such as cogeneration, wind power and an innovative burner/boiler system that converts palm shells, the remaining waste of the palm oil industry, into a fuel source. Today, 40 percent of the company's global electricity comes from renewable energy sources
- Last year, SC Johnson launched the Windex® Mini concentrated refill pouch, in hopes to revolutionize the use of cleaning concentrates. Concentrates use less packaging, decrease shipping impacts and reduce waste that ends up in landfills. In 2012, the company expanded the concentrate offering, which now also includes fantastik®, Scrubbing Bubbles®, Shout® Carpet Cleaner and Pledge®, in addition to Windex®.
- The 2012 introduction of the company's Exclusive Fragrance Palette, a comprehensive list of the fragrance ingredients found in SC Johnson products. The list is accessible to consumers through www.whatsinsidescjohnson.com, the company's enhanced ingredient disclosure website. The goal is to help families learn more about what's in the company's products they use in their homes every day like Windex®, Glade® and Pledge®.
