SC Johnson CEO Fisk Johnson Addresses Future of Consumer Trust at CSPA Annual Meeting
Keynote Discusses Importance of Transparency to Improve Consumer Understanding and Trust
RACINE, Wis., Dec. 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- SC Johnson Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Fisk Johnson spoke today about the future of consumer trust at the 2014 Consumer Specialty Products Association (CSPA) Annual Meeting. A fifth-generation leader of the 128-year-old family company that makes global consumer products like GLADE®, MR MUSCLE®, WINDEX® and ZIPLOC®, Johnson has long championed the importance for transparency and greater disclosure among the consumer goods industry, and discussed the critical need for the industry to build trust so families can feel comfortable with and believe in the products they bring home. He also said the industry should be clear and fact-based in environmental discussions, and advocate for better regulation.
"Simply, the science on chemical safety is very complex and therefore easily misinterpreted and distorted. If we want to earn trust and credibility, we have to lay it all out there for scrutiny, address genuine safety concerns and uphold high standards," said Johnson.
SC Johnson continues to transform industry efforts when it comes to ingredient transparency. In October 2014, SC Johnson was the first major U.S. consumer packaged goods company to announce that it will expand its ingredient disclosure efforts by providing product-specific fragrance ingredient information. Additionally, for the first time in November 2014, SC Johnson published details from its day-to-day restricted-use list for product formulators in its 2014 sustainability report. In 2009, SC Johnson launched WhatsInsideSCJohnson.com to voluntarily disclose ingredients for the company's lineup of air care and home cleaning products, each with a consumer-friendly list of ingredients. In 2012, SC Johnson announced the release of its Exclusive Fragrance Palette to provide consumers with a comprehensive list of the fragrance ingredients found in the company's products. In 2013, the company began adding pest control and other registered products to the site.
The company is also expanding its ingredient disclosure program to the European Union in 2015 with the launch of a European Ingredient Disclosure website that will contain content similar to North American website WhatsInsideSCJohnson.com.
Open to registered CSPA members, the discussion took place at the Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on December 10, 2014.
